Youth In Action Workshops – KNOW YOUR RIGHTS !

The L.I.F.T./ Youth Rights Project is a youth-led group, supported by experienced activists, whose purpose is to educate and organize the next generation of community leaders, and help youth-groups strengthen their democracy and community change projects.
Youth Rights in Action is a Train- the-trainer workshop series for diverse urban youth to develop their youth community organizing skills. Youth will learn about how Human Rights and Democracy work, and will learn related skills including: effective communication, social-issue analysis, leadership, group facilitation, and public speaking.
Food Security Project
Organizing Community Intercultural Dinner Events and developing ways to improve access to healthy foods in St. Jamestown, such as “good food box” and bulk buying programs. The Food Security Project has teamed up with Foodshare, the City of Toronto and local organizations
to build this project.
• Youth can help with planning, outreach, event and food access organizing, cooking, promotion, entertainment, video/reporting and more
Youth Advocacy Campaign
A citywide youth campaign for basic rights and real opportunities in education, training, and jobs, as well as better youth programs from the provincial government.
If enough youth get involved, the campaign could include live events and visual arts such as posters, murals, banners, messages etc. So far we have involved youth from 14 to 29. Right now we are organizing to protect social housing and stop the privatisation of TCHC.
• Come and help with outreach, strategic research, networking and communications, documenting, event planning-coordination, public speaking and more….
Youth Empowerment Fund
Help create a local fund to provide scholarships, small project grants and apprenticeships for youth who aim to create a better world. Local youth will be able to earn “time credit” access to the fund by volunteering in the community. A a draft website has been set up to get it started.
• The Fund needs a working group of youth to do planning, web-support, promotion/fundraising, and help recruit mentors.

Advantages to Getting Involved
Youth Project leaders and volunteers who commit to one or more of these projects will start with an in-depth training in Democracy Skills, including advocacy, organizing and media campaigning. Youth who are chosen as Project leaders will receive honorariums and be first in line for paid jobs if/when grants are secured. You will also be building a stronger resume and be able to get letters of reference for higher education and work.
LIFT Youth Intern Opportunity
Position: Human Rights Assistant
Role Description
The Intern will work with Josephine Grey and the LIFT team 2 days a week to help coordinate and support our human rights projects and activities outlined above, assist with human rights workshops, and participate in planning meetings.
